Damascene rose oil, which is made by soaking Damascene rose petals in sesame oil, is a stomachic according to Traditional Persian Medicine and prevents descent of unnatural matter to the stomach. It also heals wounds in the gastrointestinal tract and expulses extra matter from it.
This oil contains essential oils and phenolic compounds of Damascene rose. Recent studies have shown that the petals of this flower have an antioxidant effect due to these two groups of compounds. Furthermore, an animal study has shown that the phenolic compounds in the hydro-alcoholic extract of Damascene rose petals have anti-inflammatory effects. In another study carried out on rat ileum, it was demonstrated that Damascene rose essential oil, especially its two major components geraniol and citronellol, are responsible for the spasmolytic effects of the plant due to the reduction in intestinal peristaltic movements. Another animal study, which surveyed the effects of a poly-herbal drug containing Damascene rose and other plants on post-surgery reflux, showed that the use of this product results in a reduction in the impact of the condition and prevents its spread.
In the human studies phase, a preliminary study in the form of case series demonstrated that the concurrent administration of Damascene rose oil with omeprazole can improve the efficacy of omeprazole.
